Descrição

This cemetery is accessed by entering the Gorges State Park. GPS reading: N 35 03.78 W 082 56.814. Elevation 1364'. Drive into the Gorges State Park and take the drive to the right after the visitor center. At the end of the pavement you must have a 4-wheel vehicle with very high clearance to proceed to any of the cemeteries. If you desire to visit any of the cemeteries in the Augerhole/Gorges area I strongly urge you to contact the Abandoned Cemetery Committee of Transylvania County and seek a guide to accompany. The cemeteries are NOT marked with trails and the roads into the area are very unpredictable and seasonal use only. My personal experience with Ronnie Chapman as my companion and guide, March 23, 2018: We left the Dodgen Cemetery, backtracking to the original forest road and drove for many harrowing miles on very rough terrain. At one point we had to get out shovel dirt and collect rock to toss into a ravine/wash in order to go further on our journey. He had brought along a shovel and chain saw just in case the worst should happen. We worked for about 10 minutes to make the road passable. We proceeded for more miles and he pulled over in a wide space and said we are in for the hike of the day. There are absolutely no markers to give you a clue of where to walk. It was almost straight up for a very long distance and eventually leveled out and we walked into the cemetery. Ronnie has become a self appointed caregiver to all the cemeteries of the Auger Hole area. Someone had carried a very nice bench up to the cemetery and I certainly needed to rest after that climb! As best we could determine there are +/- 14 graves in this cemetery mostly marked with fieldstones. There are four engraved stones, a couple having two people named on each. The engraving is getting hard to read and decipher.
