NEWS AND NOTES (THE WEST AUSTRALIAN MONDAY 1 MAY 1922)

The funeral of the Late Captain A.J. Hillman, M.C. took place on Friday afternoon last, when the remains were interred in the Anglican portion of the Guildford Cemetery. The deceased was accorded a military funeral and it was one of the largest ever held in Guildford. The cortege moved from his late residence East-street, East Guildford in the following order—Firing party from the R.A.G.A., under the command of Major F.W. Lawson and Captain Anderson, the gun carriage with the pall-bearers—Colonel Collett, Captain Beadby, Sergeants Blair and McKay, Corporal Wayman, Sapper W.K. Cook, Lieutenant Long and the Minister for Works, (Mr W.J. George), the chief mourners were Messrs Herbert, George and Valentine Hillman, (brothers); officers and members of the Tunnellers and other units of the A.I.F. and the Mayor and councillors of the Guildford and members of the Water Supply Department. The service at the graveside was conducted by Canon P.U. Henn, M.A. and the Masonic ceremony by Major R. Hand, W.M. of Military Lodge, No 15 W.A.C. After the firing party had discharged their volleys across the grave and the buglers had sounded the “Last Post”, the remains were placed to rest. Amongst those present were:—General Sir Talbot Hobbs, Brigadier-General A.J. Bessell-Browne, Lieutenant-Colonels Collet, Strickland and Manning, Majors Lawson, Le Souef, McClennan, and Dr Ferguson Stewart, Captains Andrewartha, Brockman, Goadley, Morgan, Taylor and Nobbs, Lieutenants Compton, Timms, H.A. Devenish, Long, Allen, Cavanagh, Baxter, Cox and Deschamp, and Lieutenant Louden Shand, R.A.N., and the Mayor of Guildford (Mr Chas Rhodes), and councillors C. Tattersell, J. Duncan, W.A. Billing, G.E. Jones, H.A. and C.R.R. Devenish, and E.A. Evans and Messrs J.T. Davies, M.L.A., G.A. Lefroy, W. Catton, Grasby, G.A. Farmer, Barndon, E.O. Osborn, B.S. Devenish, S. Demasson, L.C. Longson. A. Letch, H. Calder, R. Taylor, A. Brockman, J. de B. Morrison, H.S. King, J. Barnes, W.D. Johnson, A. Booley, and Watson. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs A. Douglas Jones and Co., East Guildford
