ELLEN...aged 85. Samuel's Wife.
NOTE: There is a photo of Samuel, in uniform, at Find a Grave website. Son of Ephraim and Margaret(Chapin) Fletcher. Educated at Brown Univ, graduated 1857. On 12 Jul 1861 Samuel, an engineer, mustered in with the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a PVT. He was 30. James B Fletcher, George F Fletcher, and Samuel, brothers, served together in the 15th Mass Vol Infantry in Company H. Samuel & George W Davison, brothers-in-law, also served together in the 15th Mass. On 18Jul1862 Samuel was promoted to 2nd LT. He was wounded (shot through the jaw) Sept 1862, but survived.
On 17Sep1862 his brother James was killed in action at Antietam. On 14Nov1862, Samuel was promoted to 1st LT. He was wounded again while leading his men at Gettyburg on 3 Jul 1863. For his bravery he was presented with a sword by the Regt Commander. On 3 Jul 1863 his brother, George was killed in action at Gettysburg, PA. On 4Jul1863 Samuel was promoted to Captain. On 15Aug1863 his cousin, Edward Fletcher Chapin, died at Baltimore, Maryland of wounds at age 23. On 9Mar1864 Samuel, 32, married Ellen A Luther, 23, daug of E Luther. On 28Jul1864 Samuel ended military service with the 15th Mass due to expiration of service term. He made application for a veteran's pension in Aug 1864. He died on 11 Jul 1924 at Gill, MA. Aged...93y 3m 11d. He was survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs Walter Clapp, Mrs Peleg W Eddy, and Mrs James E Adams, also a son, Edward F Fletcher.
