Description

In loving memory

of my dear husband,

GEORGE LILFORD BRADLEY,

died 29 July 1975

and his loving wife,

JULIA MARION

born 26 September 1900,

died 31 October 1988.

Photo 3 note from her great nephew;

Julia Marion BRADLEY, nee Harman, adored sister, aunt and great aunt, photographed abt. 1924-1925 age abt. 24 - 25. The family photo was handed down by her loving brother William Loud HARMAN. We believe Julia worked as a dressmaker and lived with her parents, Reuben James HARMAN & Emma Lorden HARMAN in Ballarat. (The graves of Reuben & Emma are at Invermay Park, Ballarat).

Julia is pictured in photo 3 holding infant nephew Ronald Aubrey Harman, born 1924, eldest son of William Harman and Olive Buckland Harman.

In this photo Julia bore a remarkable resemblance to her brother, Reuben Edward HARMAN, in 1918 Julia, age abt. 18, planted a tree for her brother Reuben (ANZAC) on active service overseas with 13th Light Horse Regiment, the trees planted that day formed an avenue of honour in their home town of Byaduk, Vic.

Press article; Hamilton Spectator (Vic : 1870- 1918) title info Sat 13 Jul 1918, page 8,

(title) BYADUK AVENUE OF HONOUR

"Friday, June 28th, 1918 will long be remembered as a historic day at Byaduk". "In spite of inclement weather conditions, a large assemblage

was present to witness the memorable event of planting an avenue of honour"... (a web browser link is located below to the press article).

Julia's sister Alice and aunt Mrs George Harman also planted trees for two other brothers William and Charles Harman respectively serving in No. 1 Squadron, Australian Flying Corps. Julia's three serving brothers survived their WW1 service. As often is the case in small towns, many of the other trees planted that day were for family friends or relatives of the Harman family.

Julia's brothers and sisters were Horace Lorden HARMAN, Reuben Edward HARMAN, William Loud HARMAN and Susan Alice HARMAN known as Alice. Older half brother and sisters were Sarah Elizabeth Harman HADDEN, Ellen May Harman HANKS and last but not least Charles James HARMAN, MSM, children of Reuben James Harman and his first wife Elizabeth Bishop. We believe Julia was born and at the family property "Mt Pleasant" at Byaduk, Victoria, the land was selected in 1862 by Julia's grandparents James & Susan Harman who immigrated from Melbourn, Cambridgeshire, England. Sometime during WW1 the family moved to a dairy farm near McArthur or Lake Gorrie area. By 1919 the family was living in Hamilton, then later in Ballarat where her mother Emma had been born.

Julia and her sister Alice (Susan Alice Harman HENRY) are remembered with affection by two of William's grandchildren, Chris Harman and Anne Elizabeth Harman WENSLEY.
