A sad & fatal accident occurred last Friday. Isaac Ellis accidentally shot himself & died immediately. He was standing at the house of Ennis Ellis, conversing with Mrs Ellis, who was standing in the doorway. He held his gun in a horizontal position, his right hand over the muzzle, his left hand holding the stock or barrel. Mrs E turned and went in doors, when she heard the fatal discharge. For some cause he let the gun out of his left hand, when the stock struck the door stone, causing its discharge. It was heavily loaded with shot & the charge nearly severed one of his fingers which was over the muzzle, it passed upward under the chin into his throat, causing instant death. Justice Coutant held the inquest. His funeral was held Sunday at M E church, and was largely attended. The deceased was 29, dying on his birthday. He was a son of the late David Ellis of this place.
