Description

Lieutenant FREDERICK PETER HUGHES of 511 Field Company, Royal Engineers died of wounds on 6 August 1918. He was 34. He was commissioned in August 1915 and was seconded for a year for special service. On his return to his unit he went to France in June 1917. He won the Military Cross for Gallantry in November 1917. After his death his Commanding Officer described him as “ a gallant soldier, a true gentleman and a genial comrade.”

He is buried in Vignacourt British cemetery near Amiens.

He is remembered on the memorials at Blackheath Congregational Church.Christ’s College, Blackheath and Christ’s College, Blackheath.

He was the son of Maria and the late Edmund Hughes of Bromley Common. He was educated at Christ College, Blackheath and at University College, London. He was a civil engineer, specialising in dredging work and was assistant managing director of the Tilbury Contracting and Dreging Company. He worked for them on projects in South America, Canada, Egypt, France and Denmark.
