His Wife: Catherine Emily(Deyo) DuBois (1849-1930)
Two brothers have left us at about the same time. Philip departed this life at his residence Jan 23rd and his brother, Henry the same afternoon. The latter was 78 yrs old, the former 71. Both have been most respected and influential citizens in New Paltz. The same statement holds true in regard to the long line of ancestors, stretching back over two centuries and residing during all these generations in the same part of the town, though not on the same farm, where Solomon DuBois, son of Louis the Patentee, located about 1690. Mr Philip D DuBois returned to his home a month ago with his wife & daughter, after an absence of nearly a year, much of the time having been spent with relatives of his wife in Texas and Ohio. He had not been sick a day during his absence and had enjoyed the sojourn in the south & west. A few days after his return he visited Mohonk and was taken sick there. He did not improve and died as above stated. Mr DuBois was a man of great intelligence, extensive information and excellent judgement. He had his opinion and was able to give his reason for his opinion on matters generally. It was always a pleasure to converse with him. Although, he had passed the period of three score and ten his health had been good and it seemed that he might have a long period of useful life still before him. Mr DuBois resided on the farm, which had been the residence of his father Jacob G DuBois until about 1885, when he married Mrs Emily Deyo Hayden and shortly afterwards built the house in this village, where they afterwards resided. Mrs DuBois was a native of this town and daughter of Philip Deyo. He leaves, besides his widow, a daughter, Gertrude, brother, Solomon, 2 sisters, Mrs Josiah LeFevre and Mrs Ira Deyo, a step-son & a step-daughter; also a large number of nephews, nieces and more distant relatives. The funeral was held at the residence. The bearers, all nephews, either by birth or marriage, were Peter & Perry Deyo, C.L. Van Orden, Josiah LeFevre, Philip H & Roelif E DuBois.
