Solomon Du Bois, one of the oldest, most highly respected citizens of New Paltz died at his residence on Wednesday, April 9th, after a long illness. Mr DuBois was the 7th descendant of Louis DuBois(the Patentee), his line being Solomon - Hendricus - Henry Garret - Jacob G. His mother was Cornelia Deyo. He was born June 25,1839, the youngest of a large family, he outlived them all. Nov 11, 1875, he married Rachel Elting, daughter of Roeliff Elting, and settled in a new home built on the acres owned by his ancestors for over 200 years. Mrs DuBois died in 1921. Mr DuBois had one of the very first vineyards in Ulster County and the first head of registered Holstein-Friesian cattle in this section. He purchased his first herd of Stevens & Sons and imported the next 3 from Holland. He carried on both fruit & cattle business in a scientific manner until 1905, when he left the homestead where his son now resides & moved to this village. Later he planted an orchard on his farm near Modena, of the new varieties of apples at that time, notably Delicious. In this orchard he has been actively interested with new plantings and experiments until a short time ago. Although he was a great sufferer for more than a year, he was uniformly cheerful & uncomplaining. Mr DuBois was Republican in politics, a charter member of Huguenot Grange, New Paltz, & Holstein-Friesian Assn of America. He was a consistent member & officer of Reformed Church. He is survived by 3 children, Evelyn DuBois, Roeliff Elting DuBois and Mrs Jerome LeFevre. From New Paltz Independent and Times April 10, 1924.
