..."Erected by the people of his charge in token of their high esteem, and their grateful remembrances of his services."

Description

From stone: Born in Dedham Jan. 1848, 1816. Was graduated at Middlebury College 1837, and at Andover Theo. Seminary 1840. Was ordained in Northbridge 1845, and after a pastorale in that place of twelve years was installed pastor of the First Congregational Church in this town June 16, 1858. died Sept. 10, 1859." Father of Katharine Lee Bates, author of "America the Beautiful."
