Evergreen is in the East End of Richmond, near the intersection of Stony Run Road and East Richmond Road. It is in the Oakwood-Chimborazo National Historic District........... An estimated 5000 African-Americans, including John Mitchell, Jr., A.D.Price, Rev.J.Andrew Bowler and Maggie L. Walker, the 1st USA female bank owner & she was African American too.... from Va Commonwealth University, website noted above..........Evergreen Cemetery was founded by the Evergreen Cemetery Association in 1891. It is located on the east end of town, on E. Richmond Road across a small creek from the city’s Oakwood Cemetery...... Evergreen’s African-American founders intended it to be one of the region’s premier burial grounds for black residents, during the height of Jim Crow segregation..... The cemetery features a geometrical layout, with a few curving lanes up the hilly terrain. In the mid-twentieth century, conditions at the cemetery declined as a result of vandalism, mismanagement, and neglect, and the entire cemetery became overgrown outside of one field still used for burials. Only in the past two decades have volunteers begun to reclaim the historic site. It adjoins other African-American cemeteries, including East End Cemetery and the “Colored Paupers Cemetery.” It is currently owned by a non-profit, The Enrichmond Foundation. Many of the gravestones at this cemetery are worn or overgrown. All those that are legible have been photographed as of November 2021.
