Descrição

This cemetery is located in the 1800 block of West Crawford St. in Denison. It is on the north side of the road just west of the railroad track on property owned by the WJ Smith Wood Preserving Co. Turn on the gravel driveway at the radio tower. Park and walk east, around and behind the fenced off tower. It is amongst the only clump of trees in the field, not far from the railroad track and pre-dates Denison by 14 years. This cemetery is named for James B. Shannon. James B. Shannon [1812 - 1849] and his wife Nancy Forrester Shannon [1814 - 1848] share a headstone which is now broken into multiple pieces. James B. Shannon was one of the earliest settlers of Grayson County, Texas. Both James Shannon & Nancy Forrester Shannon were born in Warren Co., Kentucky. He was one of the original Commissioners appointed by the Texas State legislature to locate the county seat, to be named Sherman. James Shannon was also one of the grand jurors who signed the exoneration of Charles Galloway of the murder of Holland Coffee in 1846, finding the killing to be self defense. The grand jurors were said to be among the leading citizens of the newly-created county of Grayson which had a population of about 500 persons. After James B. Shannon died, his land was partitioned in 1861. This cemetery was very large & contained a large 'potters field'. However, as time passed, the cemetery was "lost" and forgotten in it's own environment. In 1970 Norman Gordon, who lived nearby on Crawford Street, found it among the trees while walking across the area. In 1870 the marker for Katie W. Ansley was found; Ansley Lane was named for her family.
