Also known as Pilchuck Cemetery. The burials in the old Snohomish Pioneer Cemetery -the first cemetery in Snohomish, - were relocated to several area cemeteries, when the state approved the highway to cut through the cemetery in the 1930-40's. Known burials were through 1923. The markers that remain in this cemetery, were markers that were found, and replaced on a portion of the previous cemetery grounds, by the local Historical Society, to honor the early pioneer families. The tombstone markers currently placed in the Snohomish Pioneer Cemetery do NOT reflect the burials of those underneath the names. The markers were placed, merely as a memorial. Many early burials in this cemetery are unknown and possibly relocated to the pit at the local GAR cemetery in Snohomish. The existing markers were found among the remaining construction from the highway. There are about 112 burials that were not removed, according to local records. Whereabouts of remains are now unknown and thought to be under current buildings or building projects.
